I really have a tough situation. I am 27 years old. My mother passed away in June. My little sister is 15 years old. Her father who is not on her birth certificate told me that he wanted me to have custody and would sign over his rights to her. Instead he went behind my back and got custody. He has custody, but she is staying between friends because he is an alcoholic, has a record of domestic abuse, and he is a truck driver who only comes home every two weeks or so for a weekend. When he is there he is drunk. I live about 250 miles from there, so I have to go on weekends to check on her. Since he has had custody she has been skipping school and her grades have dropped. She wants to come and live with me because she says that she just feels like she does not have anyone because of how her dad is and because I am so far away. I just want to know what steps I would need to take to get custody of her....the quickest and easiest steps to take (if there is a such way).

Find an Attorney.... that is the quickest and easiest way. If he is in fact leaving her with others all the time then you shouldnt have a problem. The Attorney can petition the court for a emergency hearing and can access her school records etc... something that at this point you have no legal rights to since you are not a parent or guardian.
