My husbands daughter has lived with us for two years. her mother and my husband were never married. The childs mother just asked if we would let the child live with us and we did. We have not received or asked for any support from the mother while the child has been living with us, and the mother has not bothered to offer us any thing in the form of support. The mother now wants the child to move back with her. the mother lives with her mother and has two other kids. does my husband have a substantial custody case

Having had physical custody of the child for the time period you have stated his chances are very good. He needs to get an attorney now and file in your local family court for full custody of this child - and by the way support at the same time -- both of these parties created this girl and both are responsible for supporting her.
Get out your phone book and find an attorney now....
Good luck and God Bless

Do not allow the mother to have unsupervised access with the child until you file for custody. She can fail to return the child and there will be nothing you can do about it until the court custody hearing.
