I am the parent of a child who has a dead beat dad as a father. Wont get into the long of things, but he is currently 10,000+ in arrearages. His army reserve unit has been activated and they are going to egypt to be a part of the operation against bin laden. He states the only way he can go, and he wants to go, is if I sign papers removing his arrearages from child support. If not he cannot get a passport. Is there any validity to this? He says he will pay me directly, which is unlikely since I haven't gotten anything at all for about a year now. His second option is to sign away his rights. As much as I want to say yeah, do it, since he is not in his daughters life anyway. I won't because I dont want my daughter later in life to say, mom its your fault I cant see my dad.

He can WANT until he's blue in the face, he needs to support his child. Tell him sure you'll sign the papers removing his arrears as long as he pays them FIRST! Also, even if he does decide to sign away his rights, he is not signing away his obligation to support her, he is only signing away his right to have contact with her. Unless you are married and your new husband wants to adopt your child, your ex will be on the hook for paying support regardless if he signs away his rights.
