What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? LA

My ex has a newborn in his household now. He has not been employed since November, and I have not seen child support since December. He owes $2,000 in child support, and $800 in medical bills. He has informed me that he is unable to collect un-employment, and I have offered him a ton of work through friends and family. He claims to be disabled. I have applied for the SNAP program to assist me with food, but I am really struggling to make ends meet. He does not want me to go through the Office of Family Support, but I do not know what else to do. I am pretty sure that since he was laid off, he would be eligible for unemployment, and if he is disabled, he should probably apply for disability benefits. Something tells me that he may already be collecting possibly both and that is why he does not want me to go through Office of Family Support. His excuse for not paying anything is that he has to care for his wife and newborn. I emailed him that he also has a daughter to provide for and that i would accept anything he would offer. All i received was a response that there is nothing he could do. I told him to do what he has to do, because I will do what I have to do. He informed me that he will be caught up on the $2,800 by the beginning of June. When is a good time to file for contempt, and is it even worth it? Should I continue with my application for SNAP benefits? And if so, would the Office of Family Support take action in collecting child support for him? He normally is not late, but this past year has been really rocky. He has bounced my check on numerous occasions, then deposited a check and stopped payment on it. I have learned not to depend on the support as i have taken the advice previously given to me on this board. There is an order in place that he is to pay each month, however i did not elect to go through the system and have his check garnished. I will take any advice that I can get. Thanks so much!

SNAP is a state program for food assistance. Thanks ladies. I just don't want to get an attorney involved if I don't have to. My money is exhausted and I would rather spend what's left on it towards my daughter right now.

You go through the state, and it will have an attorney representing the state. If you're going to apply for SNAP, then you can tell ex that it's all the state's doing that they're coming after him for the support.
