What is the name of your state? Maryland. I was pulled over by police for a minor traffic violation in which the officer told me that my license were suspended do to "Non Payment of Child Support" on 9/27/04 this happened Thursday night on 2/28/06. He then wrote me a ticket for driveing on a suspended license and said If no one could come get me and my vehicle that he would inpound my truck and I would go to jail.So I called my wife at work in which she had to get some one to ride with her to come get me and my vehicle. So I had to take off the next day from work because I had no license to drive to work and to take care of this problem.I called MVA in which they confirmed that they were suspended to this and in order to get them back I would need a "Letter of Compliance" From Maryland Child Support Enforcement Agency. So on this day off I tried contacting then VIA phone and the recording said "The System is being Updated"Mind you I called my employer the same night that all of this happened and told him I would need the day off to take care of this matter. So after calling My wife she had to take a half of day off of work to drive me 50 miles to there office, when I got there they told me they could not do anything at that time "Do to system being Upgraded". The next day I called and got hold of a Rep.of Child Support and she could not do nothing over the phone and told me I would have to go in person.Again I the night before I called my employer and let him know I would need additional time to fix this matter. My wife had to take another half day from work to drve me another 50 miles to there office. When I arrived there The receptionist told me they do not take clients on Fridays,GET THIS,"Because this is there day for doing paper work" I asked the receptionist to at least give me some type of proof that I was there to show my employer and he would not even do that.So now I have to take off Monday and Drive another 50 miles down there and get this taken care of.I called my employer to let him know about this,He dont want to HEAR IT! So thanks to Baltimore County Child Support I have no license nor do I have a JOB! without a job how am I going to pay child support. And with all the time that My wife and I have missed work it has cost us about $450.00 in Pay from work so far. Someone Please Help!

why do you keep missing work to drive down there when you dont know if they can help you? I would keep calling until I got someone on the phone, perhaps you can pay over the phone and have the proof you need faxed to you. There is no need to keep missing work and driving all the way out there.

I was told they could not help me oner the phone, and they have been garnishing my wages for 16 yrs

Knowing Maryland hes probably right.

They will not schedule an appt. They will tell you "You need to walk into the office." I have heard the same thing. They do not like to deal with things over the phone even if its necessary.

Your thread title of "Child support may have cost me my job!" is misleading. It should have been "Not paying my back child support may have cost me my job!".

If you owe BACK child support, then of course they are going to take your license. You need to take the necessary steps to get it back. Also, I'm SURE you received notice that this was going to happen a couple of years ago.

Zigner - read his posts and stop being an idiot. Yes, he has arrears. But he IS paying them off, apparently according to an agreement. So the question is what's happened to get the suspension.

My husband also Maryland arrears when he lost his job for 3 months and they are adding it to the current one for a year until it finished. Even the Maryland Child Support Dept. already set this payment, their system will automatically send information to suspend the driving license. They will send you a letter to inform this. I asked my hubby called Child Support Dept. on the same day to settle this matter and yes, they fix it at that time right then. Child Support has to inform the MVA diretly. You don't need to go strainght to MVA. Why don't you settle this issue when you got the letter?

To inform your company about your have arrears of child support and get pulled by the cop and your license suspended just showing how irresponsible you are. That is true the company cannot judge you on this, but this is a real life. The company is not going to sympathy you for this. What you should do, settle this issue on the phone, call Child Support or DMV 10 times a day if you need to, therefore you're not losing your job and your wife missed hers. Good luck.

It is an expensive lesson.

What was the reason that you had arrears? There is sometimes a good reason for them besides just not making payments.

Like for example, man had a one night stand, never saw the woman again, never knew there was a child born, didnt even know there was even a pregnacy, got served as one of the possiable fathers, found out he was father, went to court and found out amount of monthly CS payments will be, just went to court couple of weeks ago. Child was 4 months old before a case was filed, took another 3 months from the time he got first paper to find out for sure he was father and then go to court. All at the pace of CSO got charged arrears till the day child was born tho he did not even know a pregnacy resulted or even if he was the fathers since there was several possiablilty listed. So already several thousand in arrears. At court besides having the monthly CS payment set they also set a monthly payment on arrears that will also be auto taken from check. Works barely over minuim wage, and just found out he will not be able to renew his license (which is due for a renewal next month, unless he has back payment are paid. Job does require him to have a license.

Yes there is alot of dead beats out there but sometime there is good ones that are getting the short end of the stick and since the court set up the payments then they should not lose their license.

This is Maryland DCSE. They never have all of their paperwork up to date. He could have had everything in line but if they don't he gets penalized. I've seen people turned away because the "worker" didn't want to be bothered. When you call, you go to a call center, where the case workers aren't working and these people can only read what's on their computer. Maryland is severely backlogged. Yet, it is still true that OP should have never had arrears and then he wouldn't be in this position.

Arrears happen. People become ill, lose jobs, etc...

If you were actually fired from your job as a result of this mess then you have some time on your hands. File for unemployment. Then go file for a reduction in child support. You may not get the reduction, but you might get the matter cleared up effectively.

As they say in basketball "Airball!" "Airball!" -- because that's exactly what that stupid advice was.
