i purchased a computer from circuit city a few mons. ago. the computer came with a $400 rebate if i signed up for three years on internet service w/compuserve, the employee showed us a list of locations, and asked which one we were the closest to, which was hilton head, she then gave us the #the computer would dial when we used the internet, we asked her if this was a local # to us or not, she said yes(she looked in a book, and a second employee looked in a book and looked it up in their computer)both employee's assured us this would not affect our phone bill, a month later we get a phone bill over $900, c.c. says they cannot be held responsible for knowing local calls for our area(we live in beaufort,s.c. and we bought the computer in augusta,g.a.)but they are selling the service, shouldn't they be responsible for providing customers w/truthful info.c.c.says we should have checked w/our phone co. first, but c.c. sold us the product, why should we have to call another co. to get info. about a product they sell, shouldn't they be held accountable? any info would be appreciated!!

Nope, in my opinion, Circuit City has no liability to you on this issue.

First, most ISP's have a disclaimer when first setting up the dialup routine, that YOU are responsible for determining if long distance charges are applicable to the number YOU enter. Since I don't use your service (Compuserve), I don't know if your ISP has this disclaimer or not.

Additionally, considering that you were buying in Augusta GA, dialing from Beaufort SC, dialing to Hilton Head SC; you should certainly have at least checked the long distance question yourself and not relied on some $6.00 per hour clerk (even two of them) to decide for you.

And, you should have realized that with those two towns about 40 miles (driving distance) apart, long distance charges were certainly possible.
