In a civil trial, must a defendant who has been served and answered the complaint be subpoened if the plaintiff intends to call him / her as a witness at trial?

In a civil trial, must a defendant who has been served and answered the complaint be subpoened if the plaintiff intends to call him / her as a witness at trial?
No. The plaintiff has the right to examine the defendant... when the defendant provides his testimony to the facts.
