I live in Colorado. I am being sued by my niece who resides in California. She has placed a judgement against me by using a televised civil law suit based out of Chicago. She is suing me for a ring she bought for my mother. My mother passed on in 1995. My father gifted me the ring on the day of my mother's funeral. My father has since passed away. I have had the ring in my possession ever since. My question is not whether or not I have rights to the ring. I am willing to give it back to my niece if she feels so strongly about it. My question is: What other alternatives are there to settle this out of court? I would rather not have to appear in this televised courtroom for a number of reasons. (Time off of work, traveling across country, and participating in the media hype that she wants to create by being on the show.) Do I have a choice in the matter?

Yes, the 'televised lawsuit' has no statutory jurisdiction in the matter and can only hear the suit if you approve and agree to abide by its decision. Simply refuse to allow them to hear the case.
