What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? I live in Missouri. On 3 recent homeowners claims that I made, my insurance company made the claim check out payable to myself and my mortgage holder jointly. Is this legal? Is it common? Thanks.

Yes. Call the loss mitigation department at your mortgage company. They will tell you where to send it. The mortgage compnay has to endorse it.
