What is the situation with classical music? Is this is public domain?

i am a film student and i am wondering if i can score my film with beethoven or mozart, and not end up in legal trouble.

what legal role do the performers of the classical music recording play in the copyright. the conducter?

please help me.

You will require permission of the recording artists to use the music. More info can be found at the BMI and ASCAP websites.

You can use any classical music you want without royalties, as long as YOU play every instrument in it. However, if you are going to use someone elses recorded music, SOMEONE will own the rights to that particular recording. Someone like BMI or ASCAP
