What is the name of your state? TX

The recent suicide of my best friend has caused a bit of confusion over titles of cars.

We purchased two cars for my children under his name almost two years ago. (due to divorce, my credit was not very stable). Though the titles were in his name (only) I have made all of the payments on both vehicles.
With his death, and no will, what will happen to these cars. Do they go to the probate hearing, be returned to the creditors, can I request to assume the notes and continue paying the debt with the title in my name upon paying out the loads??
Thank you,
DH
