Who sets the prices for COBRA insurance? Can the price be higher depending on the medical needs of the insured?

The reason for my questions is that I'm a consultant and my contract might be ending at the end of March. At that time I will be 24 weeks pregnant and maybe be considered high risk because of a condition I had with my first pregnancy. Will the insurance company charge me a higher rate for COBRA insurance based on my medical needs or is the COBRA amount already set?

The documentation from my employer says that the employer pays half of my insurance. I would assume that if my contract ends then I will have the pay the half that my employer pays (which is fine by me). I just don't want to pay an extra $1,000.00+/month for the insurance based on my medical history.

The formula (actual premium + 2%) is set by law.

The price for COBRA is set by the carrier and is the same premium (plus a max of 2%) charged to your (former) employer.

When the premium charged your employer changes, so does your COBRA premium.

When the coverage offered by your (former) employer changes, so does yours.

For the benefit of any other posters who may have a similar question, COBRA is a Federal law and what somarco has provided applies in all 50 states, not just Kansas.

The COBRA premium to the former employee can never exceed 102% of what is charged to the employer.

Thank you both. It's comforting to know that if my contract ends, my insurance costs won't be based on my medical history. I will only have to pay my portion (which I paid before my contract ended) and the employers portion plus 2%.
