What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TN

I have a Dr bill for my child that was about 6 months old. However last month I made a 10 dollar payment. We have several dr bills at this clinic and I have paid on several of them but I guess hers was missed on some of the payments.

In fact last month I had to take my child to the dr twice that month and made a 10 dollar payment and then a 20 dollar payment. Turns out the 10 was only applied to hers and not the 20. The 20 was applied to mine. The way the lady talked today was they were getting ready to send mine to collections too.

I asked her why my child's bill went to collections even after a payment had been made. The lady stated to me that a 100 dollar payment had to be made every month in order for it to stay out of collections. I didn't think this was true? I thought that as long as you paid something it didn't go to collections.

Can they send it to collections no matter what if the balance isn't paid in full?

Yes they can send it to collections when FULL payment is not made. You cannot unilaterally decide how much and when you pay your bills. The doctor's office is under no obligation to accept payments.

I was under the understanding though if they did accept that payment then it meant they were accepting of it.

I talked to them today about the payments and how they were misapplied for some reason. They worked it out with me , the debt is paid and they called the collection agency to let them know to take it off. :D

Absent an agreement for a time payment plan, the entire amount is due in full. It has never been any different. What is different is that lots of people and businesses no longer provide the courtesy of a default/implied time payment arrangement, or have raised the requirement for it. One reason is so many have been screwed out of money by people who just quit paying.

A payment of $10 has no requirement to it other than subtracting $10 from the balance and maybe adding on a fee for handling additional payments beyond the one that pays off the account.

If it has all been paid, now, that's great. Be sure you have a receipt or acknowledgement of that in writing.
