What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California (initial contract signed in Maryland)

Hello,

I was recently contacted by a debt collector offering to settle a debt they said they had purchased from Sprint. I responded immediately, in writing, that the debt was invalid. They have now replied saying that the debt is real and have sent a photocopy of a billing statement from Sprint, dated January, 2007.

I resided at the address on the statement (Maryland) for 5 1/2 years after this billing statement, and kept uninterrupted service with Sprint up until I moved to California in September, 2012. There was no attempt by Sprint to collect this debt, nor did they ever suspend my service due to any unpaid bills. The notice received in February was the first that I had heard of this matter.

Am I correct that the statute of limitations for either California or Maryland would apply here, as no previous attempt to collect had been made until 10 years after the debt supposedly occurred? What further steps should I take in this matter?

Thank you.
