What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York
Hello,
I've recently decided that computers are my calling and, as a result, am planning to take my A+ exam next month and work tech gigs outside of my full-time job for area companies on a temp basis to save up money to start a business. My target time for opening is 1-2 years max, as I believe the overhead to the business is very low, unless there's something I'm missing. I'm trying to write up a business plan, and a few questions came up.
I am not looking to cut corners whatsoever, especially when it comes to adequate insurance and doing things by the book.
I plan on using a vacant cottage outside of my mother's home as a workshop when I bring home or people drop off PCs to work on, but primarily I will be going to client's homes to do the work there.
Since at this point I am looking at just doing personal computer repair, data recovery, and backup (nothing for businesses), does anyone know what a sufficient amount of liability insurance is?
I was thinking 25k, but am not sure if this amount is too low. At the suggestion of a friend I have also called two (three as of edit) similar businesses in the area, but neither would offer up any information to the competition, understandably.
Do I need to establish an LLC before I go about acquiring business insurance? If not, am I placing my self at a risk of also being sued if something goes on, even if I do have commericial liability insurance?
If some of the work is being done on my mother's property, do I need to apply for a zoning variance? (It's a rural area, with the only business being a strawberry farm two doors down). Would that impact the amount of insurance my mother pays on the house itself? If so, I would look for an alternate location as I do not want this to complicate my mother's life.
Also, since I will be using my personal vehicle to drive to work sites, is it necessary that I acquire commercial insurance on the vehicle as well, or if not necessary, is there a good reason that I should?
