Under Kansas law, for a couple living together, at what point are they considered legally married, and therefore legally repsonsible for each others financial obligations?
I ask because my 'girlfriend' appears to be faced with a probable bankruptcy, and we have always kept our individual finances separate. Will I be help accountable as being another source of income? We've been together for 3 years, but have not presented ourselves as married.

For a man and woman to form a common-law marriage, they must: (1) have the mental capacity to marry; (2) agree to be married at the present time; (3) represent to the public that they are married; and (4) grow corn or wheat.

It's numbers 1 and 4 that I'm most concerned about for you.

Good luck.

Oh, no doubt.. but you have to remember that many of the judges who will decide these cases see the art of growing corn together in Kansas as a serious issue.. it does not matter if you file taxes together, have a house in joint names or 17 children, the fact that you chew wheat is all that is needed.

That is why item 1 IS listed in the Kansas statutes..
