Michigan State: Question, is this discrimination?
My company has 3 categories of workers, #1 salary, management
office workers (non union) #2 Hourly, die setters, tool room
maintaince (men-nonunion) #3 Hourly, production workers, and
inspectors (union).#1 and # 2 employees receive full medical
benifits for themselves and family members paid by the co.
also a co. paid pension fund, a 401K that matches half.
#3 employees receive medical for only themselves, if the
insurance goes up they must pay the difference, no pension
fund,a 401K that the co. matches at 15% example $10 employee
$1.50 co). The union is of no help, and sems to be in cohouts with the co. This co. has over 500 employees, aprox.
300 union workers. Can something be done or is it a lost cause. Thank you,

If you think the Union is in bed with the company and not acting to protect its members interest, I'd suggest you go to the NLRB or to ask another union if it would want to replace the existing union. BUT the fact that terms of the union differ from non-union plans is not necessarily illegal discrimination. Salaries and wage rates, work rules and benefits may also differ, and I'd bet the union members get the equal or best of the deal overall compared to non-unionized employees.
