Hi, we are developing an Android multi languages quiz game, where the goal of the player is to choose the correct translation of a given random seed word. Players will have no way to choose seed words to retrieve their translations. But we are concerned about Copyright infringements if we use dictionaries to set up our game words database. So, our question is: to use bought dictionaries as a starting reference to build our Game database is a fair and legal use of the dictionaries, or it is a Copyright infringement? Thank you in advance for your kind advice.

Thank you for providing the name of your country, Amaral. FreeAdvice is a US Law forum.

Dictionary definitions can have copyright protection, but it is not the basic definition of a word that is offered this protection. What is protected is the way the definition is expressed (e.g., the sentence examples) and the selection of words and any extras added that make the dictionary original and creative.

You will want to locate an IP attorney in your area for assistance with your quiz game app so all aspects of it can be personally reviewed but I do not see that it should be too difficult a task for you to avoid infringement.

Good luck.
