What is the name of your state? Indiana

My heater in my duplex has not been working properly for since the beginning of winter (november), and my landlord has been notified via phone, and by written letter. I with held rent in December and January. We finally spoke in February and I agreed that if the heater was looked at and fixed, I would pay the back rent. I paid February's rent and the heat is not fixed. I received a threatening note from the landlord telling me that I needed to either pay or get out by the end of March. They have done nothing to fix the heat and even told me in a note that they could not afford to fix the heater right now. They have now posted another note on my door telling me to get out by Monday (March 24th) or they will file for an eviction and serve me papers at work and sue for the back rent if I don't give them the rent. They have also nailed the back door to the laundry room closed so I cannot get in, leaving only one exit from the duplex (isn't that illegal in case of fire?) I am planning to move out within the next week...what should I do?:eek::eek:

Did you research your state laws on withholding rent/repair and deduct before you decided not to pay?

Call in housing inspections about the heater and the door and send your rent payment via confirmed mail delivery. If the inspections dept condemns the unit due to lack of heat it & the blocked fire exit it will give you grounds to sue the LL for some of the rent back.
