What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Oh

I don't think this goes here, but I didn't know where to put it. I was just wondering if when you sell someone a vehicle, if you have to sign it over in front of a notary. I've heard contradicting things. Several months ago I sold a vehicle and just signed it over in a parking lot without a notary. Now they lost the title and want me to go sign for a lost title and it got me to wondering if this vehicle has still been registerd to me this whole time and if I can be held responsible for anything such as if it was in an accident or something. I am totally ignorant about any of this.

You need to sign over the title AND notify the DMV of the sale, so the new owner can register it in his own name. The notary isn't the problem so much as the failure to notify the DMV.
