Please bare with me. I am 20 years old and not experienced with how many things should work. I am seeking advice because I don't have any other sources to ask.

A week ago someone merged into my lane right outside of a college that we both go to. Due to a lack of experience and my midterm already starting at this point, the only information I got from them was their license plate and their name (which enables me access to his Facebook) and phone number. No police report was filed. I want to take it through insurance but I don't have their record or drivers license, but I have proof of the other guy's admission to fault and his refusal to provide insurance over text. All I know is that this guy goes to my school so I could maybe ask for the campus police to scout out this particular vehicle, providing them the context of the situation. Other than this, what can I do to get them to compensate the damages done? Mechanics quoted me upwards of $3000 to fix what happened. Is it considered hit-and-run if they refuse to provide any other information? Thank you for any and all advice.

When you called your insurance company to report the accident, what did they tell you?

No. I will not get naked. However, I will be patient, and bear with you.

1) Contact your insurance company.

2) File a police report. Additionally, because there was in excess of $1000 in damages, report the accident to the DMV using Traffic Report SR 1.

So what did you do? Collide with his vehicle, ask him his name and then drive off??

It takes five minutes to exchange information at the scene and leave if that's what you wanted to do.

Let your insurance take care of this. The campus police are not going to involve themselves in something that is a civil matter at this point.

When you two exchanged info, did he REFUSE to provide other contact info or insurance info? Or, did you simply not ask for it? The local police agency MAY take a report for this. Or, they may not. At this point, it is likely to be seen as a civil issue, not to mention the fact that many departments in CA do not follow up on misdemeanor hit and run matters.

Ultimately, you can consider a Small Claims action against the other party if they are uninsured.
