Hi! I am a veterinarian working in a residency program at a large private university. There are 2 veterinary technicians who I have learned are conspiring to soil my reputation and destroy my career. They were seen giving each other a “high-five” in the hallway. When asked what it was about, one of them stated while giggling, “we have a new victim…oops I shouldn’t have let that out”. I believe they were referring to me and I feel several events over the past few months support this belief. This indicates a pattern of behavior which I believe is very destructive and devious. They are telling lies to a faculty veterinarian about me and this veterinarian has permitted this deliberate defamation to occur even after she discovered proof of the slander. My reputation and career have been jeopardized by this small group of people who have a long history of such behavior. I am working in a residency which is a very small specialty within the veterinary medical community and fear my future may already be endangered. The next step is to go over the faculty veterinarians head to the director of the program. This will most definitely turn the veterinarian against me and make my time in the residency even more difficult. Should I and could I pursue legal action in this case? Thank you for any insight or assistance in this matter.

No one can answer what you SHOULD do. That is your decision after considering all the options and repercussions of each.

could I pursue legal action in this case?
Could you?? Of course you could. And based on your post ("They are telling lies to a faculty veterinarian about me and this veterinarian has permitted this deliberate defamation to occur even after she discovered proof of the slander.") if you can prove this was defamation, then you likely have a good case.

So, with that, go talk with a good LOCAL attorney.

DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT - get a spiral notebook and write down all dates and incidences - what they did/said, what really happened, your actions to the faculty veterinarian - EVERYTHING.

Then contact a good attorney for a consultation for a course of action.

Thanks for the advice. I have been documenting everything recently and will continue to do so. I hope to settle this once I approach the director and hopefully will not need to resort to legal action.
