Hired a painter to remove wallpaper, decorative trim and paint the walls. Painter's employees damaged woodwork in home (removed stain and paint on woodwork). Painter tried to cover up areas of missing stain and the paint but it was the wrong color. They were not contracted to do anything with the woodwork nor did they ask our approval. They removed most of their stain but I found more and removed it myself. I now have stain on the drywall, have multiple walls areas that did not get painted and walls that were not prepped before being painted. Painter states they have completed the job but I did not sign off on walk through per their contract. They are refusing to finish the job or pay for the damages. I have since filed a claim with their insurance company. I paid a percentage at the beginning but still owe a balance. My question is, now that I filed an insurance claim, do I need to pay the balance although the work is not finished?
