I have done some painting at my paid job, animals and cartoon type things on the wall, and several people have asked me if i would come and paint something at their homes, or in their children's rooms, and they would pay me. They usually want disney characters, or copies of things in their childs favorite book. Is it legal to copy things like that? What is the name of your state? PA

No, it's not legal, it would make you potentially liable for trademark and/or copyright infringement. That said, so long as you are not advertising that you do such work, and if it is only in the private homes of people, it seems pretty unlikely that anyone would ever find out or bother to sue you -- but if they did, you would likely be liable for infringement.
