What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

I like to create Software and I have taken some classes on Copyright and Trademark laws and all of that fun stuff. I want to make a program like Netflix, where it has movies, TV Shows, etc. and I would like to also implement music like Pandora or Slacker Radio. What I was wondering is, how would I be able to get the movies, TV shows and music into my program without getting in trouble for it or it being illegal at all?

I would think you would have to get special permissions from who ever created the movie, TV show or song, but how would you get in contact with them for this? Would you just get a hold of CBS or TBS, etc. in order to get the correct permissions?

I just want to make this software and not have to tear it all down after months of work, and maybe even get sewed for it if there is copyright infringement. Oh, sorry, also would you have to buy the movies, download them from the Internet or would they actually send you them? But any help of any kind would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

You buy the licenses.

(That's a simplistic answer, but it's also accurate)

If you even think about venturing into this type of endeavor, you can't afford NOT to have an attorney on board.

You will need to acquire licenses to use copyrighted material. You will need to contact the holders of the copyrights.

I suggest you contact an IP attorney in your area for a personal review and advice, because there is much more involved with your plans than can be handled on an advice forum.

Good luck.
