What is the name of your state? IL
I created a handy little "how-to" guide available over the internet. (High-Tech-eBook, if you will...). I hold full copyrights for my website and my guide. Registration is on its way in to Uncle Sam.
A customer bought a copy, read it and rewrote his own and is now selling it. Now he (my new compititor) has opened a website and has copied small sections of my text word-for-word off of my website.
---------------
I guess I have two issues, one being my with website and the other being my guide.
(website)My question is, How much text wording needs to be copied in order for me to claim infringement? 2 sentences? 2 paraghraphs?
(guide)Even though my guide does have alot of procedures involved, it is the wording and arrangement of the wording that I hold copyrights for. Even so, alot of my procedures (and commentary that goes along with it) get copied all the same... clever as they are, they like to add a word here and delete a word there- but nevertheless resembles my works without denial.
Does swapping a word every two sentences constitute new ownership?
I was wondering if anyone could elaborate on the "derivative of works" laws also... and would it apply in my situation?
I undertsand a lot of copyright basics, and before I take out a second mortgage on my house to hire a lawyer, I'd just like to see if there are any angles I am have not yet seen.. any advice is appreciated.
