What is the name of your state? KS

I hope this is the right forum for this. But my question is fairly simple. Who owns the copyright to an email and letters and things of that sort? The recipient or the sender?

I read in a book on copyright that the person who sends the email or the letter holds the copyright. If so, would that preclude me from posting it on the Internet?

Thank you in advance. What is the name of your state?

In a very technical sense, the writer of an email or letter probably owns the copyright to the email or letter (assuming the subject matter of the email of letter is copyrightable in the first place).

No it would not preculde you from posting it on the internet, but it could technically make you liable for copyright infringement if someone decided to sue.

But the chances of that are so slim, it's not even worth thinking about. If the content of the letter is problematic, they will sue you for libel or something, not copyright infringement.
