I was wondering what kind of copyright laws may be in play for a book I am writing. I am gathering information for a historical informational book on arabian horses. In the book I will include a pedigree, name of horse and other statistics including show and race records. Some of the pedigrees or horse information has previously been printed in stud books. I can get a lot of information off of the internet, but am wondering if there is any way possible that any of the information is protected under copyright laws even if I personally input the information? I do not want to be at war with the very people I am helping by compiling such a work of research resources. What are my options, and would it be advantageous for me to write to each individual stud entity and request permission to print information from them? Thank you for the help.

Facts are not protected by copyright. The fact that Super Glue was born on 5/15/10 from sire Crazy Glue and dame Super Tasty is just a fact. The copyright would cover the creative expression of that information.
Assembling facts from other sources into your creative work is fair game, as is people taking those facts from your book.

Thank you for that great information. I will definitely be starting this long and tedious work, and I really appreciate the input.
