i have a question concerning copyright law. i teach high school in michigan and my class would like to produce a poster and then sell the poster. we are worried that we may be infringing on another person's copyright. approximately 20 years ago a man developed an informational poster for math teachers which compared various math skills that are taught in high schools with what jobs use those skills. it was basically a grid listing the math skills vertically on the left with 100 different careers listed horizontally across the top. if a particular job used a certain math skill this was designated in the chart. the original producer of the chart placed the information on a poster, patented the poster, and has been selling it to math teachers for many years. originally he got his information by interviewing people from various careers. this poster is now somewhat outdated. my class wanted to develop a similar poster with new careers and updated math skills listed. we will also change the name of the poster and change how the poster is set up. the biggest similarity with the original copyrighted poster is that our poster will also dispay a grid showing which jobs use which math skills. i hope this makes sense. my question is are we violating that original copyright? is our poster different enough for us to copyright it? please let me know what you think.
