I have a few questions and hope you can assist. I currently work as a virtual assistant and am soliciting my customers on the idea of a quarterly newsletter. I am considering "outsourcing" to have freelance writers submit articles to be included in the newsletters I create. If I purchase these articles from freelance writers, I would want to use each article in newsletters created for several different customers. In addition, my customers want to distribute the newsletters in a variety of formats. Some customers want to e-mail an HTML version to their customers, some want to attach the newsletter as a link from their website and some want to print paper versions of the newsletters to be mailed to their customers. What implication does publishing articles in multiple newsletters and multiple formats have on copywrite laws? Can I contract with freelancers for "first series rights" or do I need to purchase "all rights"? Is there anything else I should consider when contracting with writers? Is a standard work-for-hire agreement going to be sufficient? Can you recommend resources that may be available to guide me in the right direction? I am hoping to make newsletters my niche and see these articles being used over and over in many newsletters. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
