Hi, i am an 18 year old mother of a 2 month old in Pennsylvania. I am currently living with the babies father who is 21. Things are not working very well with our current arrangement and I am considering taking the baby and moving in with my aunt in New Jersey. The babies father has acted violently against me, has had angry outbursts, is emotionally unstable, and in one recent case has gotten drunk n could have endangered our baby (if i didnt stop him from holding her). I do not, however, have any proof of this stuff. If I decide to move out (which i believe may be the best for my child), I am afraid her father will fight me for costody. I don't know much about law and was wondering if someone could tell me what would happen in my case. Responces would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Have you established paternity or have any orders from the court?
Have you reported any abuse?
Do you work or have any means of support?
You could move to NJ and establish residency which takes 6 months, there and then file for custody and child support, however he could file in PA before your residence in NJ was established, which while you might still have primary custosdy, you might have to provide the transportation because you moved away, so depending on how far apart you will be could present a logistical problem? please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline number 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) for advice on how to work with these issues.
