this was in CA.

my cousin bought an 85 Merc Topaz with supposedly only 66K original miles. she was told that it "ran like a beauty", and that he (the seller) would "drive it to LA", implying that it can be driven long distances. she did not notice it was labeled "salvaged" on the title until she came home with the car, she took it to a shop and there are so many things that need to be replaced, including a muffler and a CV boot, totalling around $700. the guy won't take it back, he says he will only pay for the cv boot. she bought it for $1100 and the blue book gives it a zero value (obviously). does she any recourse?

You cousin has no recourse. A car of that age is well beyond any limits covered by state lemon laws. Your cousin should have taken the car to the mechanic before she bought it.
