I live in california and have a question concerning my elderly mother who lives with me.

I have discovered that she has a credit card that she used to make some purchases. she gets her social security check on the 3rd of each month. this bill is due by the 3rd so her payment has always been late. the late fees attached to this card are now almost double what she owes. the original amount owed was $2,000. now her total amount due is almost $4,000. she lives on a very small amount each month (under $800). is it possible to ask them to wave these fees so that maybe I could send a check in to pay this off in full for her?

thank you in advance for your time and effort.

Certainly, it is possible to ask them to negotiate a reduced payment, but realize that they are under no obligation to do so.

One suggestion: Get EVERYTHING in writing.
