What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Colorado

I have a legitimate Private Student Loan, well 2 actually totaling 33k+. It was sent to collections.
I made 12 payments between November 2013 to October 2014 to NCO collection agency by direct payment. But all of the sudden the payments stopped coming out of my account and I figured that it was sold to another collection agency.
I never received anything afterward from the old agency or the new agency. Then it also disappeared from my credit report so I thought maybe it was forgiven.
Then all of a sudden it reappeared on my Equifax credit report ONLY in January 2016 with a name of Transworld Systems for both loans and not on any of my other credit reporting companies. But still didn't receive anything from them.

Then I received a letter from Machol & Johannes LLC yesterday for only one of the loan amounts. I know they are a lawyer/collection agency.

Is there some type of recourse for them not contacting me for over a year with no letters or communications, then all of a sudden it reappears on my CR?

Any advice would be helpful.
