I got a copy of my hubbys credit report and there is a collection item on there for $12.00 and yes it says 12.00. I thought I had read somewhere that there was a minimum amount that could be reported. I dont remember where I read that or if it is even true. I contacted them and they say it is for a dental bill. Thing is my hubby is active duty Army and he gets all of his dental care for free, so I know this isnt something we owe. Can they really put this on there. I mean 12 bucks. They told me since they have had this account since November of last year that they dont have to validate the debt cuz I am past my 30 days to dispute. Any ideas?

They're full of crap. If you request validation beyond the initial 30 day period, they just don't have to cease collection activities, but they DO have mark the debt as 'in dispute' on the credit reports. The 30 days to disupte is NOT a bar to validation if you dispute AFTER the 30 day period. After the initial period, they can ASSUME the debt is valid and continue collection effords, that's ALL it means.

If this is a bogus collection, then you need to challenge them on it and send them a validation letter. You should also disupte this with the credit bureaus and explain in your dispute that you've never had service from this dentist and your husband gets dental care free from the military.

You probably should also try contacting the dentist in question, I"d be willing to bet its a mixup.

Oh.. and there are no minumums for reporting.. I've read where collections for as little as $3.00 get reported.

There is no minimum amount per se when reporting an account to the CRAS.
Send a request to the Dental Office of the bill in question and date that this service was rendered.
Dispute with each CRA in the meantime.
