Last night, I spent an hour and a half in the closet crying because a call I recieved from a creditor. I told them my situation, I lost my job cause I had a miscarriage and was in and out of hospitals for a week. The man on the phone, a supervisor told me to quit making up excuses and pay the money. That was the 3 call I recieved yesterday, not to mention the 2 on Friday, and the ones I missed and the one today. I told them I would send a check as soon as I got the money, I would pay what I could. One guy told me if it wasn't half the bill, it wasn't good enough and they wouldn't accept it. I said I was sorry, but I can only pay what I can come up with whereupon he informed me that he didn't care about my other bills, I needed to pay this one first. I said, I would lose my apartment if I didn't pay that, he said I don't care as long as it got paid. This has went on for over a week now. They are threatening to sue me, garnish wages for any job I may get, and the worst was when I informed them as to the loss of my baby, they said good, I couldn't afford it anyways! I looked at the Fair Credit Act and it states in there that '(5)Causing a telephone to ring or engaging any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with intent to annoy, abuse, or harass any person at the called number'(Title 15, Chapter 41, Subchapter V, Sec 1692d of the US Codes). I would say that this is against ethical and moral standards. What can I do about it? I have asked them to quit calling, I will pay what I can when I can, but they still call and harass me. If they violated this law, what is my next step? I cannot afford an lawyer, but it looks like I will have to.
