What is the name of your state? NC

hello,

my gf received a letter from Financial Credit Services the other day, stating that she owed 6000.00 on a credit card, that she doesnt even know about. she told them that she never had an account with this credit company, but they say its a valid debt, which they purchased from another debt collector. they said they would settle for 3000.00 now. if she doesnt, they will put a judgement against her house! she asked where the original debt was from, and they gave her some abbriviation of a company, but thats all they know. can they do this? they dont even know who she owes the money too. how can they say its legit if they dont know where its from, or if my gf indeed owes it? plus, the debt is from 1990! is the company just fishing? she is going to write a letter to the debt collector and disprute it. if its a credit card debt, doesnt the debt collector have to show proof that she owes this money, before they can put a judgement against here house? like credit card reciepts, with her signiture on them for a start!!! this doest seem right! and what is the sol for a credit card debt in NC?

thank you,
bob

The debt is SOL. She should send a letter stating the letter stating such. Stay off the phone. A debt collectors job is to confuse and harass. Be sure to send the letter CMRRRR(certified mail receipt return receipt requested). Also, acquaint yourself with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
