What is the name of your state? Virginia

14 years ago someone I know committed a crime (at least I think he did) that was reported by the victim. The police had evidence the person had committed the crime but he was never arrested and I can only assume everything was dropped.

I'd like to find out for sure if the guy committed the crime (to protect someone elses safety). I called the local police and they said those records are not available unless I have permission from the people involved.

I've seen websites that will do criminal background checks and similar searches for a fee. Depending on the information the fee could range from $15 to $40.

Are any of those websites legitimate? If so, how can I tell which ones? And would the info I'm looking for be available?

Don't Bother.

Are any of those websites legitimate? Sure, most are. They have all bought access to a centralized records database and are, for the most part, selling the same information. In that sense they're a lot like credit report businesses. There are thousands of websites that will sell you a credit report, but they all get their information from the same 3 sources. Equifax, Transunion and Experian/TRW.

If so, how can I tell which ones? Look for certifications and testimonials from known and verifiable organizations, look for an actual mailing address and working telephone number, whether they have press releases, the "quality" of their website, etc... You could also probably ask your manager or boss at work or other business owner that has employees. Even if you do happen to find a lemon, looks like you'll only be out about $20.

And would the info I'm looking for be available? Most likely NO. Those sites report criminal records and if the guy was never arrested and never went through the judicial process, there's nothing on his record concerning the incident.

I agree. The on line sites may provide some information. However, much of it can be outdated and inaccurate. My opinion, some of these sites are not worth the money they charge.
