I recently graduated from DeVry University. In one of the classes in our last trimester, most of my classmates and I had a particularly negative experience with the professor of that class. A few of us collaborated to create a website documenting our experience with this professor called "The Incompetent Grading of Professor Devinder Sud":

http://sud.f2g.net

I am mildly concerned that I am at risk of being sued for libel for creating this website. A friend told me that calling Professor Sud "incompetent" might put me at risk. I would appreciate it anyone knowledgable could take a look at the website and inform me how likely it is that I will be sued, and if I am sued, how likely it is that I will lose.

I live in New Jersey, and I assume that Professor Sud lives in New Jersey as well.

Thank you.

My response:

As long as it's your opinion, then it's not slander. The word "incompetence" is one of those vague, and ethereal, words. It means everything, and it means nothing. How does one gauge incompetence? One person might say that Sud is brilliant, and others might opine that he's a brain dead idiot. Again, those are opinions that people are entitled to say and express. Professor Sud would have a devil of a time trying to prove his competence, and identifying just what "competence" means as it relates to him.

No, I think you're on solid ground.

Thank you for your prompt and informative response. Have you taken a look at the other content on the website? Do you notice anything else there that may put me at risk?

Thank you.

Defamation is not one of my strong points so I'll leave that issue to IAAL.

However, I'm curious. Just what is it that you are trying to accomplish with this?
