What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I am disabled and rent a furnished room from a woman in California. I have lived here 4 months and yesterday we had a discussion about car insurance and she became upset because I refused to pay for it. (I drive her kid home from school everyday in her car... long story that's not necessary to post) So I came into my room later on to discover she had suddenly decided to "give away" a table and computer chair that I was using, and she dumped ("placed" in her words) everything on that table onto the floor and so I had to clean up a big mess and found myself having to stand in front of my PC to be able to use it. (the items in question are owned by her, but can a landlord just remove items from a "furnished" room whenever she gets mad at me?)

I now desperately want out of this situation. But I am scared to give her 30 days notice because I feel she is the type of person that could become very vengeful and nasty if I tell her I want to move out. she could remove more furniture she suddenly wants to "give away", or cut off my internet or take my food out of the fridge, and because this is California I can't legally audiotape or videotape anything (perhaps in my own room I could, not sure).

I can't afford to move until the 1st of May when my next check comes in and part of me thinks I should just leave on the 1st without telling her and just kiss my security deposit goodbye. There is more to the story that has led me to want to move in the previous weeks: $50 rent increase, New rule: can't eat in my room anymore, her 2 kittens that she purposely starves so they might catch rats and mice that only exist in her head, among other issues. (Her quote: "a cat with food in it's bowl ain't catching any rats or mice!) and as an animal lover it makes me sick.

So if anyone has any advice as to how I can get out of here as painlessly as possible, I am all ears.

Thx

in your rental contract does it include the table and chair as included furnishings? If not, she is free to remove them at her will. If so, then she must provide a table and chair and her actions violate the rental agreement.

if the animals are mistreated, after you leave I would surely notify the ASPCA or whomever deals with animal mistreatment.

failing to provide proper notice can obligate you to the owing rent for the period a proper notice would have covered.

is your room the only room she rents out? Do you rent by the week, the month, or possibly some other period of time?

The questions are to determine what laws cover the situation so as to be able to ascertain what length of notice you are required to provide.
