What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New Jersey

I live with my wife and 4 year son. We don't have great marital history and have been separated before but have been staying together again trying to make it work. My wife is from Canada and has been insisting that she would like to visit her family there. I am planning to accompany her with the child. While this is all good, I am concerned that once she is in Canada , there is a small chance that she might not want to return and most likely will not let me bring the child with me . There is no custody order right now.

Is there anything I can do to avoid this situation before it happens such as getting into any order or agreement or carrying any paper work with me. In the unfortunate event of the above scenario actually unfolding , how should I handle it ?
