Custody of my son

My son's father and I were never married. I live in Missouri. He was put in prison when our son was 2 months old and now, over two years later has decided to return, he is a very violent and unpredictable man. He has been taking part in criminal activities since his release...he is on parole. He has threatened to take my son and not give him back...my son is terrified of him, my son has never met a stranger. My 7 year old daughter, not his, does not want to see him again. I want him out of our lives, what can I do. What rights do we all have?
