custody time laws

we are in california. we have 50/50 custody of our 11 year old. i would like to start with an immediate question: is custody time counted per night (overnight) or per day (8am - 6pm)??

details/reason for this question is there is an agreement of son staying with one parent no more than two weeks. this holiday's game biomom is making sure he is with us from 3pm to 6pm one afternoon, claiming this means she did not have him for two weeks (her term) "straight". it's not worth fighting over, but worth knowing the answer with certainty for future games.
