Jan of 2016 I was contacted to build a computer for a man who's budget was agreed at $500. He also wanted me to look at this laptop while I work on his custom computer, due to issues performance wise. After I had constructed the computer, I tested it for 3 days non stop using 1080P youtube tests, which is designed to simulate GPU and CPU (graphics and processor) usage. Then I did a Prime 95 test which stresses the computer to max, and I ran that for a day. So 4 days total of elevated testing, then off one day, then two days of normal operations testing. No issue whatso ever. The laptop I replaced the hard drive and it booted normally, but I couldn't test any farther because I didn't have the password, which was never provided after I requested it.

Flash forward to install day, I returned the laptop, and installed the custom computer. No issues, even help install his giant monitor.

32 days later he notifies me there is an issue with the computer. I swap out two power supplies, and the RAM. But could not reproduce the problem the customer described to me every time I am not there. I checked logs on his computer, and nothing shows but only that the power is cut off. The man refused to take a picture of the screen "Blue screen of death" so it could help the diagnostic process along. He then refused to continue diagnostics. The failure to comply led to losing the RMA I had for the new motherboard I installed.

My gut feeling is that the motherboard died/dying due to something he told me he did. From his account he pulled the power plug straight from the computer as it was turned on.

He requests a refund by May of 2016. I conceded but failed to contact me, or reply until Nov 2016. Now threatens to sue and bring criminal charges.

The guy already burned well over $200 worth of services and parts I provided to him, in labor and no pays, where he positioned that the service he requested he'd actually pay for.

This entire situation took over an year to flush out, and now making even more threats, I wanted to help 7 months ago, but now it's feeling more outside the need to do so. What do you think?

If you offered a refund in May 2016 and he failed to respond, you can either offer the refund again or let him attempt to sue you.

The fellow does not appear to have a supportable civil suit, however, and I see no criminal charges that can arise from what you describe.
