What is the name of your state? California

I own and operate a restaurant/lounge. It is located in a strip mall. Last weekend some windows were etched overnight. A neighboring business proprietor has been making false statements to other tennants in the strip mall, customers and my employees stating that our clients were responsible for vandalism of windows. The strip mall is across the street from a public park, bus stop and a walking path from a near by university. We are good people who work in our community with schools, churches, outreach programs, etc. This disgruntled business owner in the strip mall is making false statements with malice. He has threatened to have our business closed and is asking how long our lease is. He states that he will do everything in his power to have us closed down. I know he does not have a leg to stand on however he is a barber and people in barber shops gossip. So he is spouting off and then his clients could potentially tell other people and my reputation could be damaged. How can I make him stop this defamation of my character? What is the name of your state?

You can't sue on the basis that his clients MIGHT talk to others or that your reputation MIGHT be damaged. Before you have a basis for a suit, you need to prove that damages already exist.
