On august 10 David letterman promises on the air to my daughter,a freshman entering Ball State a scholarship to Ball State. The show has since aired again. Several audience members came up to her and her father and congratulated them believing what they had heard also. We had a local newsreporter get through and were told it was just a joke. Do we have any recourse?

Depends entirely on the context of the 'promise'.

If he clearly made the offer of a scholarship with the clear understanding that it was being offered, then it would be an oral contract.

Get a copy of the broadcase video, or a copy of the transcript. After reviewing the context and promise, if it clear that his intent was to offer the scholarship, then he is probably obligated to do so. Also, a claim could be made that he made the statement purely to bolster his 'ratings' as a nice guy with no intent to follow up. This wouldn't be very nice.

Get the tape and transcript. That is the first step.
