about 6 years ago, my married boyfriend owned a business that was being shut down by the irs. they gave him 3 days to pay $36,000. within that 3 days, he moved the business, changed its name, and illegally transferred all of it's assets into his friend's name. i say illegally because the business actually belonged to his wife also. as naive as i was, i put the dba for the "new" business in my name. i do not know what ever happened with the divorce and all, but what are the laws governing a dba? can i be responsible the next time he decides to dodge the irs? what can i do to remove my name from the dba, and is it even important?

Fictitious business name

Under those facts, I doubt you can be liable to the IRS for the business debts, but you could be liable to other creditors, who relied on your name. So I suggest you go to the county office where you registered the fictitious business name statement (I assume that is what you mean my the dba), and follow the procedure for removing your name.
