What is the name of your state? NY
What happens to your social security benefits when you die?
What happens to your IRA when you die?
I appreciate the quick responses on this forum. Thank you.

My understanding is that:
Your SS benefits terminate at the time of death, although your estate does qualify for a death benefit, which I believe is still $255.

Your IRA goes to your heirs/estate, unless otherwise specified in your will.

Your IRA goes to the beneficiaries you have named, and if you were foolish enough NOT to name one or more beneficiaries, to your estate where it is distibuted pursuant to your Will, if you have one, and if not, according to your home state's law of "inestate distribution".
