Hi all,
Any advice would be greatly appreciated on this, as if I'm forearmed with the right knowledge it will make things a lot easier for me!
I live in the UK, and about three weeks ago I ordered some wall graphics from an online retailer. I won't say their name, except to say that they are a fairly large company based in the US. I put into my basket products to the value of about £25/$50 and proceeded to the checkout. It did not state at this stage how much shipping would be, and I couldn't find this on their website, but I presumed (as with most retailers) I would get to a stage in the checkout process where it would inform me of the shipping costs, and that if they were unreasonable I could just exit out of it. I entered my card details and pressed Next and I got a message saying "Your order is now being processed. You will be informed of the shipping charge when your product ships". I was quite surprised at this as it seems quite unorthodox to inform you of how much you will be paying after they have taken your credit card details.
A couple of weeks later and I checked the site and my order status is "In production". I spent a few minutes searching around the site and finally found a page that said "Average international shipping price is $66/£35". If you are in the UK we suggest you use our UK distributor. I have now found out they have a distributor in the UK which would cost $4/£2 to ship to me.
I have written them an email asking to cancel my order, but my question is- is it legal for them to go ahead and process my order, and debit the MASSIVE shipping cost (for a sticker!) from my account without my agreeing to it? I suspect they will say it is too late to cancel my order, and I will end up paying a ridiculous amount that I have not agreed to, so I would like to know if they are allowed to do this- it seems very deceptive.
Thanks, any help is much appreciated!
Rosie
P.S- The company are based in CA.
