Az- I was contacted by a law firm to collect on a debt from an accident last year. I was at fault, but the insurance company never contacted me.
They told me that I owed 2000 and must pay 600 on top of a 200 monthly payment, or my license would be suspended. Is this possible? How do I defend myself. I am willing to make payments, but I can't afford that. This is my first time posting, and I dont know if I am allowed to name the law firm, but I did my research on them, and their reveiws are horrible. It looks like they resort to manipulative bullying tactics often.

Turn the matter over to your insurance...
(Of course, if you had insurance at the time of the accident, you wouldn't be here, would you?)

You can attempt to negotiate with them, or find a way to come up with the money. A third option would be to arrange alternative means of transportation until your license is reinstated.

I plan on negotiating a payment plan with them. I just need to know if I have to worry about them suspending my license because they decide i'm not paying enough. Ive done some research, and everything i've seen says a collection agency has no authority to order the DMV to do anything. I was hoping for clarification on that point, and something a little more solid than google.

A collection agency can't suspend your license for a debt, but what it appears you have here is an UNSATISIFIED JUDGEMENT. Your license can very much be suspended for that and it isn't some "collection agency" that will do it, it will be the Superior Court of whatever county this occured in. Yes, an installment plan (with the court not the collection agency) will forstall this.
